Mental Distress Looks Different for Everyone

Depression

Low self-esteem, loss of interest in normally enjoyable activities, low energy, and pain without a clear cause are common symptoms of depression. Major depression can significantly affect a person's family and personal relationships, work or school, and sleeping and eating habits. Feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt or regret, helplessness or hopelessness can pervade all aspect of life.  Physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and digestive problems could also be present.

Anxiety

Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. For some, anxiety is more than temporary worry or fear. It becomes overwhelming and does not go away. Triggers can come from work, school, family, or social situations. Others experience panic attacks, where intense fear or a sense of losing control can occur.

Loneliness

Loneliness can be described as a social pain, ofter perceived as a lack of connection and intimacy. There is a gap between one's desires for social connection and the actual experiences of it. It is considered an epidemic in the U.S. by the Surgeon General.

Caregiver Fatigue

The physical, emotion and mental exhaustion that be felt when overwhelmed from the stress of caring for another.  Many caregivers also feel guilty when they spend time on themselves rather than caring for the other person. Its symptoms are much like the symptoms of stress and depression.
